Considering samples and techniques

Coffee sack melted into fabric, this was a really interesting idea and the samples that came out of using this technique were really cool to look. It adds so much texture to my work that is usual and I find that they're really interesting to look at. Although I think this idea has a lot of potential the technique can not be taken any further because using intense heat pressing causes the plastic in the fibres to melt and release harmful toxins into the air. Unfortunately this was a shame as it almost completely ruled out using the technique. Therefore I will have to carry on with a different idea or consider how I can replicate a similar idea some different way. IMG_5019 3.JPG

This idea came about whilst doing my collaging I liked the idea of combining to materials together by simply weaving them at theirs seams. The difference in materials means that it almost changes the material properties and turns it into a completely different material. Although the idea is quite nice I don't think it was best executed here on this sample. Firstly because the coffee sack is awful to sew with, secondly I don't know if I actually think the materials work that nicely with one and other in my personal opinion. I think I like the idea of incorporating more weave as it is a really interesting technique that can bring a lot to a material but other fabrics would probably better to consider instead.

I think this idea is a really interesting technique this involves using paint on transfer ink, the perfortrated surface of the white knit on the left means that the dye filters through onto the calico on the surface. Then taking idea a step further I sewed the two separate pieces together making this composition of a repeated circle motif. I think the overall composition is nice and simple but has a lot of texture to it. I think there's a lot of potential to explore with this idea and the technique could be really strong to work over the top of some surface manipulation of some kind perhaps. This could be interesting to explore further and consider in my designs.

Similarly this idea takes on the techniques of the previous sample but alters the way the materials interact along with the application of the print over the top. I like this idea but not as much as the previous im not sure the printing that nice to go over the top of it in this way at least. I do however really like the appliqué of the knit to the yellow fabric, I think it creates this not regular tensions between each material. This will probably be an idea I explore further within my work aswell.

This padding technique inspired by the quilting I saw in this elevator was an idea I had I liked how I could isolate the tapestry along with added surface manipulation making the piece quit literally stick out and become 3D. The technique although simple is really effective on both parts; the use of cushioning but also the path working of contrasted materials. I feel like the cushioning has this feeling of comfort generated to it because it is so soft but there's also this somewhat sinister feeling generated which also an interesting idea; I explored this more in my research. To take this idea further I should consider different sizing and shapes in my designs to see where it leads me to within my work.

These ideas all have a lot of potential between themselves but also work quite well with one and other and I could see them working well together with one and other I think it would definitely be helpful with my progression to have now considered which ideas I like and then taking them a step further and considering how they work in the same space and on a much larger scale.
